Tip Tuesday: How to revamp your tired outdoor wooden furniture!
Spring has sprung! It’s time to start thinking about alfresco living as the weather begins to warm up. Painting outdoor furniture pieces is an easy, fast way to transform and update the look of your garden or patio. Just follow these simple steps to achieve the best results:
Step 1 – Sanding
This method is probably the most labour intensive but also the most important in preparing the furniture for painting. Start off with medium-grit sandpaper and sand the entire surface, removing the top layers of paint or varnish. Then, change to fine-grit sandpaper to obtain a smooth finish.
Step 2 – Remove Dust and Debris
When you’re finished sanding you should use a vacuum and paint thinners to remove any final particles from the wood. Be sure that all of the debris is removed before applying the wood primer.
Step 3 – Apply Wood Primer
Apply a liberal coat of wood primer to the furniture using a paint brush. Allow 1 to 2 hours for the primer to dry. Primer helps the paint adhere to the furniture and adds an extra layer of protection from the elements.
Step 4 – Sand Once More
Use the light sandpaper to smooth any rough spots that are left after the application of the primer. Use a tack cloth to remove any debris caused by the sanding of the primer.
Step 5 – Paint Your Furniture
Lastly (and this is the fun part) apply the first coat of paint with a clean paint brush on the surface of your furniture. Allow for the first coat of paint to dry for at least 6 hours. Be sure to let the first coat dry thoroughly. Then, apply a second coat and allow to dry for the same amount of time as the first coat. Be sure to allow the furniture to dry thoroughly for at least 24 hours before using it.
