Tip Tuesday: How to clean mould/mildew off walls in the bathroom and bedrooms.
Firstly, before any mould cleaning takes place you should really try to stop future mould growth. Mould thrives in damp humid conditions, so the best way to make life difficult for it to grow is by:
1) Circulating the air inside your home
Ventilating your bathroom and bedroom will replace moist air with dry air from outside. Mixing cold and warm air temperatures can help solve the problem of condensation. Open windows or doors if temperatures permit, or turn on your fans.
2) Place a dehumidifier in the room where condensation occurs.
Dehumidifiers remove airborne moisture that contributes to condensation. To get the most out of this tactic, place the dehumidifier as close to your window as possible.
How to kill mould and clean it?
Mildew, whether on walls or other surfaces, is not great news for your health but luckily it is possible to use everyday cleaning products to banish that pesky fungus.
Step 1) Use a solution of chlorine bleach and water – usually one part bleach to four parts water (alternatively you can also try specialist mould cleaners like Mr Muscle Mildew Cleaner from supermarkets or Mould Buster from CTM).
Step 2) For tricky areas like tiles and grouting in showers, use a stiff-bristled brush and scrub the blackened area. Or for walls, use a thick white cloth. Allow the solution to stay on the surface for at least 10 minutes.
Step 3) Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.
* Remember to wear gloves and open windows or use a fan in the room while working.
A word of caution: mould can cause allergic reactions and poor health, so if you have an extensive problem with mould, it may be best to seek expert help.
